Academic Link, Alexandre Brandt receives 2012 Peer Mentor Award

On Thursday, January 26, 2012 four international students received a Salad King International Student Award. As a residence community, we are thrilled to highlight the work of Alexandre Brandt, a 3rd year film student and second year academic link is this year's recipient of the Peer Mentor Award.

The Salad King International Student Awards are sponsored by Mr. Ernest and Mrs. Linda Liu, owners of the popular Salad King Restaurant. The Salad King International Student Awards focus on recognizing international student leadership during their time at Ryerson. By establishing the annual Salad King International Student Awards, Ernest and Linda Liu demonstrate that Ryerson's neighbours can make a difference in the lives of international students.

Alexandre was recognized as a strong role model by both the Academic Link team as well his students. He displays that he cares deeply about his academic success and encourages others to take their academics seriously. He is passionate about art, good food and making others aware of his Swiss heritage and global experiences. He has an open heart and is willing to share stories about his life in Switzerland as well as his many travel adventures from around the world. He encourages his peers to dig deeper and feel inspired by what they do and who they are. Students have come to respect Alexandre for his opinions, creativity and support. This year, Alexandre has led several groups of Image Arts students to the AGO and ROM to assist them in gaining an early start on a project due in their second term. This summer, he will invite other students to join him in Italy at a music festival that he films annually to gain a rich experience abroad. In addition to his work in Student Housing Services, Alexandre also received the award for his scholastic achievements. His nomination was also supported by Professor Brian Damude, Chair of Image Arts, who spoke highly of this Alexandre's academic achievements over the course of the past two years.

On the first night of the RUamped conference, walking into aroom filled with a bunch of students who didn’t know each other, I never wouldhave expected to walk out the next day feeling really great and having createdawesome relationships with a ton of new people.

The first night’s activities were only warm up for what parttwo of the conference had in store for us student leaders. We warmed up to eachother with some icebreaker games, making it feel like leadership camp, which Iguess it kind of was. The keynotespeaker was really impressive. It was amazing to see how a genre of music couldreally instill hope into someone’s life and lead them on a completely differentlife path.

Overall, day one was a success, and very relaxed compared today two. Day two was intense and emotional, but also a really good experience.

In four presentations, we learned about how not to usedigital media (basically a reminder to not put party pictures on Facebook), welearned how to work together with people who’s personalities may clash, aboutthe importance of diversity, and understanding that there is a lot more toevery person than meets the eye.

For me, the biggest thing that I gained was a connection tonew people. In the Breakthrough presentation,you could literally feel tension and emotions floating in the room. It was acrazy experience. People were getting deep with each other, and we talked aboutthings that normally we wouldn’t want to share with the general public. We allstepped outside of our comfort zones, and at first it was hard, but an amazingchange was felt afterwards. We were all connected to each other because we thenwere able to understand that everyone has an untold story that has affectedtheir life.

After RUamped, I feel inspired to become a better andstronger leader, and really understand the quote “There is no one you can’tlove after you’ve heard their story.” Those just might be the truest words everspoken, and words that everyone should learn to understand.

The Ryerson AMPED StudentLeadership Conference is geared toward all first-year students who are Action-Minded-People-Empowered to Dream and are interested in developingtheir leadership abilities. Facilitated by on-campus student leaders, thisconference will provide participants the experience to partake in a variety ofhands-on informative sessions and engaging group activities meant to AMPlifytheir leadership skills.

Why should you attend?

If you are interested in getting more involved in studentleader opportunities on campus, such as in residence or in student groups andunions, it is highly encouraged that you attend!

As you apply for summer jobs, internships, and volunteeropportunities, it’s important to have something that distinguished you fromother applicants. AMPED is what you need! Each participant will take away withthem a certificate of completion, an excellent leadership experience, and somenew friends!

When is the conference?

The AMPED conference is being held at various locations oncampus, beginning on January 13^th at 4:00 pm and closing on January14^th, 2012 at 9:00 pm.

What is the cost?

Conference cost is $20.00, which includes admission to thetwo-day event, meals for the weekend, an AMPED t-shirt, and a participantappreciation bag with lots of cool swag.

30 HOUR FAMINE Be inspired. Be involved. Be hungry.

On Friday, November 25^th Ryerson residencestudents will participate in the 30 Hour Famine. The 30 Hour Famine is an eventthat was first initiated by World Vision. World Vision is a Christianorganization dedicated to working with children, families and communities toovercome poverty and injustice. The 30 Hour Famine is the world's biggest youthfundraiser.

During this event, participants will fast for 30 hours inan effort to raise money to help countries in need around the world. The moneyraised will help impoverished communities access clean water and food. Inaddition, the funds will also go towards developing educational and childprotection programs. As an example, last year, millions of dollars were raisedby Famine supporters and some of it went towards feeding thousands of starvingchildren in Uganda by providing agricultural education and farming tools to 800families.

Some of the activities that will take place during the 30hours include: board and video games,movies, Famine trivia and going to Nathan Philips Square to watch the Cavalcadeof Lights. In addition, the lower gym in Kerr Hall has been booked forparticipants to use on the Saturday from 2-4PM. There will water and juicesavailable plus a can’t-miss pizza party at the end of 30 hours. WEALTH OF HEALTH: Rez Students Get the Tips on How to Stay Fit and With It

On Tuesday, November 22^nd Ryerson StudentHousing will collaborate with Health Promotion to educate and inform studentsin residence about various health related topics relevant to them. The topicsto be addressed include: drugs and alcohol, physical health, mental health andof course, sex. Interactive activities will be used to engage students inlearning about the effects of alcohol and stress. From answering triviaquestions to walking around wearing beer goggles, students will have a chanceto learn about issues affecting one’s health through conversations as well aslife-like experiences.

The purpose of this event is to encourage students tomaintain a healthy lifestyle amid the craziness of their school schedule. Thishealth fair will also teach students strategies and methods for how they can bemore in control of their personal well-being.

Students will not only learn how to improve their mental andphysical health, but they will also be taught how to engage in other activitiesgenerally tied to the lifestyle of an undergrad in healthy ways. If you are astudent feeling weighed down by the burden of your books or need tips on how toknow your limit, come out to the Pitman lobby on Tuesday between the hours of6:30 and 8:30 PM and get with it.

Emergency Water Shut-Down ILLC

Student Housing Services would like to thank you for your patience and understanding over the ILLC emergency water shut-down today.

We experienced a sewage back-up last night due to the building piping shifting away from the city sewage line. The water was shutdown at that point to stop the flooding that occurred in the main floor of the ILLC.

Update: At this point, we are hopeful to have the repairs and the water back on by this evening.

In preparation for the water being turned back on, please be sure to switch any bathroom sink taps and/or tub taps to the off position, including lounge sink taps to ensure we do not have a second flood. RA's will be inspecting each residence room in the ILLC to ensure that all taps have been turned off when the water is shut back on.

For the time being, there is bottled water available at the ILLC residence service desk should you require it.

As a reminder ILLC students have been provided access to the single floors in Pitman Hall to use the common washrooms/showers. Please show your residence identification card at the Pitman Hall residence services desk and then take the elevators to your assigned floor below:

Update: Domestic water was restored to the ILLC at 6:15pm Thursday Nov 3rd, 2011.

BLUEPRINTS FOR CHANGE – RYERSON RESIDENCE EDITION: The Discussion on Ending Violence against Women

TORONTO, ON – On Tuesday, October 11^th and for the twofollowing consecutive Tuesdays, residents from Pitman Hall, ILLC and O’KeefeHouse will participate in a discussion led by Jeff Perera, Co-Chairperson ofthe Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign, about men, women, the pressures that we allface and how it affects our lives and relationships. This engaging multimediapresentation will invite students to think about gender issues, the pressures thatmen and women face on a daily basis and how they can make a difference.

Blueprints for Change is an event that was first launched in2010 and proved to be a huge success in its pilot year. During this hour-and-a-halfsession, students will also talk about the realities for women across campusand across the world, what Homophobia and Transphobia have to do with violenceagainst women and most importantly, how we can become a part of the solution. Menare especially encouraged to attend.

This free event will take place on Tuesdays, October 11^th,18^th and 25^th at 7PM in the Marion Creery Community Room(2^nd floor of Pitman Hall).

The Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign works to end gender-basedviolence and act towards change for both men and women.

Liza Nassim Returning Student Leader of the Year Award is presented to a residence student leader who has lead by example, been a excellent role model to other student leaders and has made a lasting contribution to residence and campus life at Ryerson. The recipient this year was Shiloh Lazar.

Student Housing leaders acknowledged among Ryerson’s top student leaders

Toronto, ON, March 18, 2011: The office of Vice Provost Students (OVPS) announced their leadership award winners today acknowledging top student leaders across campus in departments contained within the OVPS. The work of Student Housing Services (SHS) student leaders was well acknowledged with 4 leaders receiving top awards at the reception.

Marion Creery Student Leadership Award

This award is named in honour of Marion Creery who from 1988 to 2008 served as the Director of Student Services. It is presented annually to two Ryerson students whose leadership demonstrates passion, creativity, and perseverance in making Ryerson a better place for students to learn and realize their potential.

Maya Mboup was awarded this honour. Maya is deeply committed to helping students develop their academic potential in her work as an Academic Link. In addition, in her work as a Community Leader, Maya has acted as a mentor and facilitator to other leaders in residence. Maya was crowned Miss AfriCanada this year, lead her TRSM debate team to a top finish in a national competition, served on the executive of AEISIC Ryerson, and manages Initiatives A+- a non-profit youth mentoring program she began in her first year at Ryerson. Maya’s extensive leadership has impacted communities within residence, at Ryerson, across Canada, and globally.

Community Development Award

The Community Development Award recognizes student leaders that have helped to build a sense of community through their caring attitude, outstanding interpersonal skills and their ability to connect people to each other and to their community.

Sarah Stockdale was an award winner in this category. Sarah has acted as the Graduate Advisor- Leadership in SHS while completing her Masters in Professional Communication. Sarah has contributed to the residence community by managing the residence hero program, helping to advise the residence council, and introducing a brand new Student Leadership Program (SLP) to residence. The SLP has created numerous ways for first year students to get involved, develop their leadership skills, and create community within residence.

Student Leadership Award

This award recognizes and celebrates the contribution that Ryerson student leaders have made outside the classroom. Recipients of this award will have shown a high level of commitment, lead by example, shown initiative and made a strong contribution to their community.

Lauren Akbar and Kyra Whale were award recipients in this category. Lauren has acted as Residence Advisor and Community Leader within the residence community. Her strong advising skills, passion for people, and commitment to helping any student she comes into contact with in any way she can made her very deserving of this award. As a community leader in Pitman Hall Lauren has mentored and facilitated several residence student leaders and was recently selected in her program of Child and Youth studies to represent Ryerson during an experiential service learning project examining Aboriginal youth issues in April.

Kyra Whale has served for all of her years at Ryerson as a leader on the Ryerson Residence Council. As a floor representative, floor president, Vice-President Events and this year as President, Kyra has lead the council in planning events and building community within residence. Kyra has greatly influenced the development of the council and its’ members and also has a passion for planning events that benefit communities beyond Ryerson including Free the Children.

In a community of 850 students, it is probable that an emergency or crisis situation may arise over the span of our 8 month academic year. Student Housing Services has several systems in place to ensure we are providing highly developed support to our students during these times. This includes:

· Emergency SHS manager on call 24 hours/day, 7 days a week

· Close connections to campus partners including: The Centre for Student Development and Counselling, Security Services, Health Centre, Campus Planning (?) etc etc.

· Extensive training for full time and part time student staff in relevant student issues including mental health, sexual assault, discrimination and harassment etc.

· A connection to larger campus emergency protocol and response initiatives

· Connections to professional housing networks to establish and enact best industry practices

With the last week of classes and exam fast approaching, we have opened up Pitman Hall 110- as a available study space for residents and guests. This space will be open 24/7 and is located beside the mailboxes in Pitman Hall.

Residents are also welcome to sign out Pitman Hall 200/205 as study space if available, please check in the Student Housing Office (Pitman Hall 100) to book a time out.

Movember challenge brings prostate cancer awareness

All students in residence are being encouraged to either join or support the Ryerson Residence Grows Luxury team in honour of Movember. The month-long contest challenges men to grow a moustache and both men and women to raise money for prostate cancer.

Ryerson Ram Matt Buie won the 'B' Final at the 2010 FISU World University rowing championships in Hungary, Aug. 13-15. Buie represented Team Canada in the men's pair category with teammate Eric Tremblay, University of Victoria. This is the first international competition Buie has competed in as a member of Team Canada. The pair recorded a time of 6:46.52 over a two-kilometre course.

New laundry machines in all 3 buildings!

We are happy and excited to announce that over the summer we tendered and negotiated a contract with a laundry equipment provider for all 3 Residence buildings at Ryerson University. The old equipment was quite old and dated and it was time for it to be replaced.
We knew the timeline would be quite tight to tender the new contract and get the equipment installed in time for move-in day. Unfortunately due to delays outside of our control the new equipment could not be installed prior to August 29, 2010.
However, the new equipment will be installed this coming week (schedule below). You may experience some service disruptions while the installation takes place and the old machines are removed to make room for the new machines to arrive.
Connected to the installation of these new machines is a new OneCard-based payment system. As you know you were billed a laundry fee over the summer which will be placed on your Ryerson OneCard. This OneCard based system could not be installed until a Laundry contractor was chosen. This OneCard-based system will be installed mid-September.
Until that time the laundry equipment will be available free of charge. We ask that you respect the machines and the environment during that time by using the washers and dryers responsibly.

Rez Serves

Rez Serves allows you to spend a half day volunteering with a local organization and to make connections with community members and other Ryerson Residence students and make a difference in the Toronto Community.

All those who choose to participate in Rez Serves will be required to attend a volunteer training workshop on Wednesday, March 10th from 7-9 pm in Pitman 200.

Please choose one of the following opportunities to volunteer:

1. Sunday March 21st, 2010 from 1-4 pm
a) The Good Shepherd Centre: provides food, shelter and clothing for people in need. While the Centre continues to provide the basic necessities of life, it has also grown to incorporate programs that address the more serious causes of homelessness such as addictions, health care and housing.

Duties may include: serving meals, laundry, bed-making, connecting with sheltered users.

b) Young Street Mission: works to meet the needs of people living in poverty in our city through our diverse programs, we make a positive difference in the lives of families, seniors, socially isolated adults, homeless street youth and children. Services include a food bank and meal programs, employment and computer training, school readiness programs, counseling, daycare and a post-secondary Scholarship fund.

2. Friday March 26th, 2010 from 3-7 pm
Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club: works with young people and their families, enabling them to develop the life skills, knowledge and values essential to becoming healthy contributing individuals.

The Gerrard K After School Program runs each weekday from 3:30 to 7 pm. This structured After School program for six to thirteen year olds introduce members to variety of activities and programs that promote physical, creative, educational and social development through play.

Residence Life Staff Raise Funds for Haiti

On Tuesday January 26 the Ryerson Residence Life Team got together to raise awareness and funds for Haiti. Staff volunteered to have pies thrown at them in an effort to bring together the residence community while supporting relief efforts, and campus initiatives in support of Haiti.

$360 dollars were raised and many residence students and community members definitely enjoyed coming together to support this important cause.

votes at approximately 85% of total votes cast.

SHS Flu Update: November 3, 2009

A Possible Case
-Recently there have been 3 assumed cases of H1N1 Flu within the Residence Community
-The signs and symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus are similar to seasonal influenza.
-As with seasonal flu, most people who catch H1N1 flu do not get seriously ill.
-The current recommendations by the WHO, Health Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and Toronto Public Health are to treat H1N1 flu as if it were the seasonal flu.

What do I do if I’m suffering Flu-like Symptoms
-Communicate it to your RA, and the Student Housing Services Office (housing@ryerson.ca) and a contact in your Academic Program
-Isolate yourself from the Residence and Ryerson community – do not attend classes, events, social gatherings or visit the cafeteria or common lounges.
-If you are unable to go home - stay in your room until 24 hours after your fever has stopped and once you are feeling 100% well
-Get a Flu Buddy to bring you meals, fluids, etc. If you are unable to identify a friend to perform such duties please communicate this to your RA.

How can I stop the transmission of the flu?
-Get vaccinated at the Residence Flu Clinic on Wed Nov 11 from 5-7pm in PH200
-Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for 30 seconds or clean your hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizer
-Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
-Cough or sneeze into a tissue and wash or sanitize your hands afterwards
-Don’t share objects that might transmit flu such as utensils and drinking cups, water bottles etc.
-Watch for flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches and possibly vomiting or diarrhea and stay home if these appear
-Stay well rested, be physically active, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food

Safety alert: Church St. construction to Nov. 9

Members of the community are urged to be extra careful when crossing any part of Church St. during the ongoing streetcar track construction. The work is causing a major disruption to pedestrian and traffic flow.

The construction along Church St. north of Dundas St. began Monday, Oct. 26, 2009. Only the southbound curb lane on Church St. will be open to traffic.

The intersection of Church and Gould Sts. will be closed for 96 hours starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28 until 7 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. During the closure, police officers will be stationed on both sides of Church St. to maintain pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Crowd-control barriers and construction signs are posted accordingly.

All pedestrians should use extra caution when entering this intersection during this time.

The intersection of Church and Gerrard Sts. will be closed from Friday, Nov. 6 until 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 9.

Every effort will be taken to limit noise associated with the track construction.

SHS Statement on the Interim Appeal Policy

The following is an update and statement of clarification on the Appeals Process Section of the Residence Community Standards. On page 8 of the posted Residence Community Standards (http://www.ryerson.ca/studentservices/housing/rescontract/) indicates that the new appeals process will be posted online in August 2009.

Summer is predictably a busy time in Student Housing Services as we process over 1200 applications and prepare for the arrival of almost 900 students in 3 residence facilities. During this time we did experience some delay in the review of the Appeals Process and thus it was not posted online prior to Residence Move‐In Day.

However a draft appeals policy has been completed and will be circulated to some key campus partners for consultation. The new policy will be posted on the Student Housing Services website once the consultations are complete and the community will be notified.

In the interim Student Housing Services will retain the Appeals policy that was used last year. If you wish to enter an appeal please see the posted "Interim Appeal Policy."

All e-mails will be responded to as soon as possible. Please allow for a 72 hour response time during this high volume period.

If you wish to call us, you can reach the Student Housing Office at 416.979.5284. When prompted to leave a message, please provide as much detail as possible (Name, Student Number, Detailed message of your concern/inquiry). All inquiries will be dealt with within an extended 48 hour period in light of the high volume of inquiries.

Our offices are closed on Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1st and will reopen on Thursday, July 2nd at 9:00am for our regular hours of 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Ryerson Student Housing is getting ready to welcome the residents for the Fall 2009 semester and is doing so in style.

Not only are we busy processing your applications, planning out the Orientation Week, programming, student staff training and various other behind the scenes tasks, but we are also giving Pitman Hall a makeover.

The scattered scaffolding that can be seen from the outside tell only half the story - the inside of the building tells a story on its own. From brand new carpets, to colour-coded floor patterns and a fresh new paint job, Pitman Hall is looking better than ever and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of its students.

System Software Update

In order to improve service to our students, Student Housing is currently implementing and operating under a new system for all housing applications for the 2009-2010 academic year.

This software is integrated with the rest of the student information registered with Ryerson and will be the main hub of information exchange between the student and the Student Housing department throughout the year.

As the system is in its early integration stages at this point, it is not unusual for temporary developmental service outages. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience.

Pitman Hall Closed for Tours Due to Construction

Please note that Pitman Hall will be closed for tours due to ongoing construction.

During the months of May and June, Pitman Hall will be closed because of restorative construction including regular maintenance as well as aesthetic restoration including installation of new carpets, painting and plastering, furniture restoration, and more.

The ILLC building, as well as the O'Keefe House will remain open for tours.

Full tour schedule, including all the buildings will commence in July. Our news blog will be updated as more detailed dates become available.

Swine Flu Effect on Student Housing

Many of you are well aware of the current spread of the Swine Flu throughout the globe. Student Housing Services has a Flu Pandemic Plan that we have been preparing for years. It is not known yet if the Swine Flu will become a Pandemic - but we are monitoring the situation quite closely. Yesterday the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care raised the Provincial Status Indicator from “Green - Routine” to “Yellow - Enhanced.”

At the “Yellow - Enhanced” level it is important for a high risk area like a student residence to be particularly diligent in the prevention and surveillance of Flu cases.

§ We are unable to accept any further Applications for Residence Extension

§ We are unable to accept any further Exceptions for Overnight Guests

§ Individuals passing into the secure area of our Residence Buildings are being asked to Sanitize with the provided Hand Sanitizer

§ The Residence Life Team will be distributing Self-Diagnosis and Flu Information Cards throughout the Residence. For Tracking purposes please e-mail housing@ryerson.ca to let us know if you contract the flu

§ We ask day-time guests that have traveled to affected areas in the past 21 days or are exhibiting Cold and Flu-like symptoms to refrain from entering the Residence.

Temperature Changes

Daytime high temperatures are forecasted to be in the mid 20's for the next few days, with overnight lows dropping only to the mid-teens. In response to these warm temperatures, and since there will be little if any need for heat, we turned off the heat, and turned on the air conditioning in Pitman Hall. Please adjust the thermostat in your room accordingly - as the unit in your room will no longer provide warm air, but will now provide cool air. The system will take a few hours to fully cool down - but you should notice full air conditioning by Saturday morning.

Move Out Procedure Reminder

With the end of the year approaching, please note some quick reminders of what you are responsible for when vacating your room:

Lock Your Room

Please ensure that your door is closed and locked when you leave, as you are responsible for the room until we have completed your room inspection. You are NOT permitted to allow anyone to stay in your room after you move-out.

Garbage Removal

Your room must be returned to the condition it was in when you arrived. All belongings should be removed - garbage and recycling must be properly disposed of and NOT left in your room. If extra cleaning or garbage removal is required, you may be assessed an extra fee - please refer to the Repair and Replacement Charges Guide for more information.

During the move-out period, there is increased demand on the garbage systems in all 3 buildings. Your cooperation is appreciated, in order to ensure the buildings remain clean right throughout the exam and move-out period. All garbage and recycling must be bagged and disposed of in accordance with the directions posted. Further information on garbage and recycling will be emailed and posted on your floor in the coming weeks.

Furniture

If you rearranged your furniture please return all items to their proper position, and ensure there are no extra furniture items in your room or in the common areas of your suite. There is a fine for each extra and/or missing piece of furniture in your room - please refer to the Repair and Replacement Charges Guide for more information.

Room Inspections

A thorough room inspection will be completed after you have moved out. If you would like the room inspection to be completed while you are present you can make an appointment with Student Housing Services for the day of your move out. Please book your appointment before April 10th, 2009.

Damage

You are responsible for the condition of your room. If your room is not left in a satisfactory condition you may be assessed damage or replacement charges - please see the Repair and Replacement Charges Guide for more information. If damage charges are necessary, you will be informed via letter in May, along with more details regarding the condition of your room.

ILLC Modems

The modem in your room will be used by students next year, so please leave it in the room along with the telephone cable and power adapter. If any of these three pieces are missing during your room inspection you may be assessed a fee for replacement - please see the Repair and Replacement Charges Guide for more information.

Moving Carts

To ease your move, you will want to ask family and friends to bring carts and dollies with them in possible. We have a very limited number of carts that will be in high demand.

* June 5th, 2009 - ON-TIME APPLICATION DEADLINE; last day to submit residence application and initial payment of $400 in order to be considered in first round of Offers of Accommodation.

Residence Extension of Stay Request Forms - Due April 7th by 5pm

The Request Forms are available for pick-up at the Student Housing Office Pit-100.

The form is simply a request for permission to stay in the residence past the day of your last exam. SHS staff will review your request and respond within 5 business days of the submission of the form.

Scheduled Fire Alarm Tests - Monday April 06

Please note that Classic Fire Protection Inc. will be testing the fire alarm system on Monday, April 6th, 2009, between the hours of 8am and 4pm.

This is to advise you that during this test, the fire alarm bell/speaker will be ringing intermittently.

In case of a real alarm during the test, the bell/speaker will ring continuously. In this scenario, please follow the occupant procedures as noted in building safety plan.

If you have any concerns about the condition of your room, please fill out the maintenance requests which can be found at the Front Desk of your building.

Casino Night - March 28th

The Ryerson Rez-Wide Programming Committee will be running "Casino Night" on Saturday, March 28 from 7-10pm in the Pitman Cafeteria.

The event will feature casino games, Rock Band, mocktails, music, comedy, magic tricks, and lots of prizes to be won! Residents get "casino bucks" at the door which they spend on games, raffles, and mocktails. The more casino bucks you win, the better your chances of winning some great prizes!

Property Tax Credit for Residence

As a residence student you may claim a property tax credit of $25 when you file your income tax return; this does not require a receipt. This is the only claim you may make for residence expenses. Meal Plan dollars - Purchase towards a good cause

Do you have money left on your One Card and no way to spend it all; would you like to spend it for a good cause?

Use your leftover meal plan dollars to help support the Fred Victor Centre by purchasing a meal for the hungry. The centre provides meals for men and women who live in extreme poverty or are homeless.

It's located at Queen and Jarvis in Toronto and has been serving the community since 1894. Spend your extra meal money on feeding someone who really is hungry! Talk to your R.A. or ask any O'Keefer.

Rez Event a Success

Who says money can't get a date?

On Saturday, February 28, the Rez-Wide Programming Committee hosted a Bachelor-Bachelorette Auction in the Pitman Cafeteria with the goal of raising money for SOS Children's Villages, a non-profit charity organization that helps support underprivileged children from around the world.

A total of 26 brave volunteers put themselves on the auction block in front of a crowd of over 100 residents. Successful bidders won the opportunity to snatch a gift card from a variety of sponsors (including the CN Tower, Grill Time, Starbucks, etc.) to use on their "date". The event raised over $1200 dollars for SOS Children's Villages!

The organizers hope this will become a new tradition for Ryerson Residence.

March Break Tours - Plan Extra Time for Travel

This is just a quick reminder about March Break tours happening all this week. Between the hours of 11:00 am - 1:00 pm & 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm there will tours of the residences.

On Thursday March 19th from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm one elevator in each building will be dedicated to moving tour groups through the building.

During these times the elevators will be heavily used. If you have a class or routinely leave the buildings around these times, it is recommended that you add some extra travel time to get to your destination on time.

Ryerson Residence Formal

The Ryerson Residence Formal is being held at the Marriott Hotel on Friday, March 27th.

Tickets are $40 which includes dinner (three course meal) and two
printed photographs. Tickets can be purchased this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (March 16 - 18th) in the Pitman Hall lobby from 4pm - 7pm.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING CASH. The $40 ticket will be billed to your RAMMS account.

Discover Ryerson - March Breaks Tours

Notice all Residents,

We are offering you an opportunity to be a part of Discover Ryerson activities where you will be able to earn a gift certificate, for any store in the Eaton’s Center, of $15 to $30 for only a few hours of volunteering.

We are looking for Tour Guides as well as Residence Ambassadors for March Break, March 16th - March 20th. We will be running 45 minute tours at 11 am & 2 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday.

Thursday is the larger Discover Ryerson event that in previous years has brought approximately 1500 prospective students & parents to campus. 45 minute tours run throughout the morning beginning at 9 am until 12:30 pm. There is also a shorter round of tours at 2 pm in the afternoon.

The Tour Guides would give tours of the residences during the hours above, while the Residence Ambassadors would provide their rooms to be viewed.

Please note these positions are on first come first serve basis, so please complete the attached application and submit it to the Student Housing Services office (PIT-100). Ted Brock Memorial Award - Application Deadline March 16, 2009

The Ted Brock Memorial Award was established to honour Ted's contribution and dedication to Bond House/O'Keefe House. Each year, this award will recognize an outstanding O'Keefe House resident at the year end formal who has made great contributions to the House during his or her time there.
